Medical Transcription - A Challenging and Humorous Job By Sheryl Letzgus McGinnis How to become a medical transcriptionist is the question that I've been asked most in my life. I've been a radio DJ, a voice over artist for a local TV station and have authored 3 books, but how to be a medical transcriptionist piques peoples' interest more than any of the above. I would like to share some tips and advice along with a funny anecdote or two.Although I took early retirement 3 years ago, forty plus years of medical transcription never strays far from your mind...or your funny bone.

I could probably write an entire book on this profession and hmmmm, that sounds like a good idea. In the meantime here are some helpful tips on how to break into this profession. Although you will see ads proclaiming salaries of $75,000.00 a year and up, I've never known one transcriptionist to make that kind of money unless they have part time jobs doing transcription for other companies or they work an awful lot of overtime. It is, however, a decent paying field where salaries can range from $35,000 to $50,000, depending on how good you are and if you are paid incentive pay.

First though let's understand what it takes to be a GOOD medical transcriptionist. Sadly, there are many people in this line of work who shouldn't be. I've come across many of them and in my capacity as a head of a transcription department, I've had to let a few go. Never an easy thing to do, but the integrity of the patient's medical record must be maintained. Before you even consider enrolling in a medical transcription school you must honestly evaluate your strengths. Do you have a natural proclivity for spelling? Do you understand English grammar and know how to speak properly? You cannot depend on Spellcheck. I can't count the number of times I've been told that nobody needs to know how to spell today because Spellcheck will take care of that pesky task for you.Click Here for the rest.
